That Mario Movie Well I personally like both movies. I think the reason I liked the 1993 live action film because of nostalgia and the fact that it was the first movie of its kind. Not to mention I was only one years old when it came out.

I think being the first of its kind is the main reason why the movie is like that. Maybe they didn't know how far they could go on creativity adapting a relatively new media to cinema. If it's still hard to keep a good balance between being literal on adapting a game to a movie, or being creative and adding elements that don't exist in the source material, imagine how hard it was when there was nothing to take as reference. I like the old movie too, although I can't deny its flaws.
