(As for owning this character it’s just the version of him from his very first appearance Steamboat Willie (1928). The modern version of him from Fantasia (1940) onwards is still protected under copyright law until 2033 I believe. But I don’t think Disney will ever fully let go of the character. But I’m pretty sure you already knew that.)

By “technical things to keep in mind” I’m assuming it has something to do with only the original version of Mickey Mouse featured in Steamboat Willie (1928) is now in the Public Domain. The more modern and well known depiction of Mickey Mouse from Fantasia (1940) is still protected under copyright until 2033 I think. But I don’t think Disney will ever fully let go of the Mickey Mouse character entirely.
