Public Domain Guess that means we’ll most likely get a stupid horror film based on the original Popeye shorts. Is there anyway possible to avoid the Public Domain entirely? Other than making new stuff based on the old characters that will stay copyright protection over time.

Exactly that. That is why the Winnie the Pooh with the red shirt and Mickey Mouse in its modern form stays copyrighted.
