It's a play on the old idea of a "lucky rabbit's foot." In fact, in the earliest cartoons, it was a running gag where if he was in a troublesome situation, he'd take off his leg(!) and kiss it for good luck!

I agree, I like the aesthetic of the older Checkerboard bumpers. The upcoming MeTV Toons kind of reminds me of old CN in aesthetic and programming, so hope is still out there!
